To a solution of 4-benzyloxyacetophenone 1.1 (20.0 g, 88.4 mmol) in DMF (100 ml) at rt, was added NaH (60% in oil, 4.26 g, 106 mmol). The mixture was stirred at rt for 45 min, cooled to 0° C., and diethyl oxalate (14.4 ml, 106 mmol) was added dropwise, and the suspension warmed to rt and stirred for 17 h. The reaction mixture was poured over a mixture of ice and 1N HCl and the suspension stirred for 30 min, filtered, and the solid rinsed with water and dried to afford 28.9 g of the butenoate 1.2. MS (ESI) 325.2 (MH+).
