Procedure
A solution of 2,3,4,5-tetrafluorobenzoic acid (5.0 g, 28.7 mmol) in dichloromethane (20 mL) was reacted with oxalyl chloride (7.5 mL, 86.1 mmol) and one drop of DMF. The mixture was stirred for 30 minutes and concentrated. The residue was dissolved in dichloromethane (20 mL) and reacted with an excess of dry ethanol. After 10 minutes, H2O was added and the mixture extracted with diethyl ether. The organic layer was then dried with sodium sulfate and concentrated. The residue was taken up in acetonitrile (100 mL) and reacted with triethylamine (21.0 mL, 150 mmol) and pyrrolidine (3.2 mL, 37 mmol). The reaction was allowed to proceed overnight and was concentrated. The residue was taken up in diethyl ether and washed with saturated NaHCO3. The organic layer was dried with magnesium sulfate and concentrated to provide 4.8 g of the title compound as an oil.
