Procedure
To a saturated solution of anhydrous p-toluenesulphonic acid in dry dichloromethane (25 ml), phenylacetic acid (E4) (0.581 g, 4.26 mmol) and 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran (3 ml, 32.9 mmol) were successively added, and the resultant solution was stirred for 1 hour at room temperature. To the reaction mixture, triethylamine (1 ml, 7.2 mmol) was added, and the volatiles were evaporated. The crude title compound was obtained and was immediately utilized in the next step of the synthesis.
