A mixture of 5-(diphenylmethyl)pyridin-2(1H)-one (0.3 g) and N-chlorosuccinimide(0.184 g) in DMF (3 mL) was stirred at ambient temperature for 23 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into saturated NaHCO3 aqueous solution and the resulting precipitates were collected by filtration and washed with water to afford 3-chloro-5-(diphenylmethyl)pyridin-2(1H)-one (0.31 g) as white powder.
