To a solution of tert-butyl (2R,5R)-5-{[tert-butyl(dimethyl)silyl]oxy}-2-vinylpiperidine-1-carboxylate (Intermediate 188, 1.39 g) in THF (20 mL) at 0° C. was added 9-BBN (0.5 M, 15 mL). After 45 minutes, the reaction was diluted with water (3 mL), 3 N NaOH (12 mL) and 30% H2O2 (12 mL). After 15 minutes, the reaction was allowed to warm to room temperature. After 30 minutes, the reaction was diluted with ethyl acetate, washed with 1 N HCl, NaHCO3 and brine, dried (Na2SO4), filtered and concentrated. Chromatography on silica gel with a gradient of 0-5% methanol in methylene chloride gave 1.27 g of product.
