To a stirred mixture of methyl (2S,4R)-1-tert-butoxycarbonyl-4-hydroxy-2-pyrrolidinylcarboxylate (4.22 g, 17.2 mmol, 2-naphthol (2.73 g, 18.9 mmol) and PPh3 (4.96 g, 18.9 mmol) in THF (80 ml) was added DIAD (3.72 ml, 18.9 mmol) at room temperature under an atmosphere of nitrogen. After stirring over night, the mixture was concentrated in vacuo. The residue was chromatographed on silica gel [600, CHCl3/EtOAc (10/1)], to give methyl (2S,4S)-1-tert-butoxycarbonyl-4-(2-naphthyloxy)-2-pyrrolidinylcarboxylate (5.37 g), which was used to the next reaction without further purification.
