To a solution of benzhydryl 7β-tert-butoxycarbonylamino-3-(3-formamido-2-methyl-1-pyrazolio)methyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylate iodide (20.9 g) and anisole (20 ml) in methylene chloride (40 ml) was added dropwise trifluoroacetic acid (40 ml) under ice-cooling. After being stirred for 1.5 hours at ambient temperature, the mixture was poured into a mixture of diisopropyl ether (300 ml) and ethyl acetate (300 ml). The resultant precipitate was collected by filtration to give di(trifluoroacetic acid) salt of 7β-amino-3-(3-formamido-2-methyl-1-pyrazolio)methyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylate (16.20 g).
