To a solution of the aldehyde 6 (132 mg) in 3 mL of 1,2-dichloroethane at 0° C. was added 4Å powdered molecular sieves (300 mg), n-pentylamine (0.217 mL), and sodium triacetoxyborohydride (260 mg). After five days, the reaction was poured into EtOAc and washed with water, sat. aq. NaHCO3 and brine, dried (Na2SO4), filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to provide the amine 7 as a brown oil which was used in the next step without further purification.
