To a solution of methyl6-methoxy-1H-indole-2-carboxylate (Compound 1, 1.0 g, 4.9 mmol) in DMF (10 ml) was added K2CO3 (2.0 g, 14.6 mmol) and benzyl bromide (0.87 ml, 7.3 mmol). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 40 h and was diluted with EtOAc, washed with H2O, brine, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by crystallization from Et2O to yield the title compound as an off-white solid.
