Procedure

(Scheme 2, Compound E) The mixture of methyl 4-butoxyphenylacetate (1.20 g, 5.4 mmol) and NaH (60% in mineral oil, 0.50 g, 12.5 mmol) in DMF (25.0 mL) was stirred at 50° C. for 40 min. Bromoethane (2.0 g, 18.3 mmol) was added and the stirring continued at rt for one hour. The reaction mixture was diluted with EtOAc (300 mL), washed with H2O, and then was dried over Na2SO4. After filtration and concentration in vacuo, the residue was purified by flash chromatography (SiO2: EtOAc/Hexanes). This compound was obtained as a yellow oil (0.85 g, 3.4 mmol, 63% yield). 1H NMR (DMSO-d6) δ 7.16 (d, 2H, J=7.0 Hz), 6.87 (d, 2H, J=8.5 Hz), 3.92 (t, 2H, J=6.5 Hz), 3.55 (s, 3H), 3.45 (t, 1H, J=9.0), 1.93 (m, 1H), 1.63 (m, 2H), 1.42 (m, 2H), 0.97 (t, 3H, J=7.2 Hz), 0.79 (t, 3H, J=4.0 Hz).
