EDC (734 mg) was added to a solution of (S)-(+)-2-phenylpropionic acid (CAS #7782-24-3, 500 mg), tert-butyl carbazate (CAS #870-46-2, 440 mg) and HOBT (517 mg) in DMF (7.5 ml), and the reaction solution was stirred at room temperature for eight hours. Ethyl acetate and a sodium bicarbonate solution were added to the reaction solution, and the organic layer was separated. The organic layer was washed with water and brine, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and then concentrated under reduced pressure. Ethyl acetate and heptane were added to the resulting residue, and the precipitated solid was collected by filtration to obtain 482 mg of the title compound.
