A suspension of L-diphenylalanine (13.87 g, 57.5 mmol) in THF (100 ml), and saturated NaHCO3 (3 mL) stirred at 0° C. was treated with neat methyl chloroformate (11.81 g, 125 mmol) (slow addition), stirred at the same temperature for 10 min and then at room temperature for 14 h, made acidic by addition of 1M HCl and extracted with DCM, dried over MgSO4 filtered and concentrated to give title compound (17.1 g, 99% yield) as white solid. Used without further purification. MS: m/z=322.1 (MNa+).
