To a solution of 2-benzamidoisonicotinic acid (0.30 g, 1.23 mmol) and N,N-dimethylformamide (0.1 mL) in dichloromethane (5 mL) was added oxalyl chloride (0.13 mL, 1.48 mmol) at ambient temperature. The reaction mixture was stirred for 1 hour and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide (2 mL) and added to a solution of benzohydrazide (0.20 g, 1.48 mmol) and pyridine (0.3 mL, 3.70 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (1 mL) at 0° C. The reaction mixture was warmed to ambient temperature, stirred for 3 hours, diluted with ethyl acetate (30 mL), and washed with water (25 mL) and brine (25 mL). The organic solution was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was recrystallized from ethyl acetate to give N-(4-(2-benzoylhydrazinecarbonyl)pyridin-2-yl)benzamide (0.30 g, 67%): 1H NMR (300 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 11.01 (s, 1H), 10.80 (s, 1H), 10.59 (s, 1H), 8.61 (s, 1H), 8.02-7.88 (m, 5H), 7.65-7.49 (m, 7H); MS (ES+) m/z 361.4 (M+1).
