3.34 ml of diethyl cyanophosphate and 8.92 ml of triethylamine were added, whilst ice-cooling, to a suspension of 6.2 g of cis-4-hydroxy-1-(4-nitrobenzyloxycarbonyl)-D-proline and 8.41 g of 1-[2-(4-nitrobenzyloxycarbonyloxy)ethyl]piperazine dihydrochloride in 62 ml of dry dimethylformamide, and the resulting mixture was stirred at the same temperature for 30 minutes. At the end of this time, the reaction mixture was diluted with 250 ml of ethyl acetate, and the dilute solution was washed with water and then dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The mixture was concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure, and the resulting residue was purified by column chromatography through silica gel, using a 4:1 by volume mixture of ethyl acetate and methanol as the eluent, to give 7.84 g of the title compound, as an oil.
