Procedure

Phenethylamine (340 μL, 4.3 mmol), 6-tert-butoxycarbonylamino-hexanoic acid (1.0 g, 4.3 mmol) and 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (700 mg, 5.1 mmol) were dissolved under nitrogen in N,N-dimethylformamide and cooled to 0° C. 1-(3-Dimethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride was added and the mixture stirred overnight, allowing to warm to room temperature. The mixture was partitioned between water and isopropyl acetate. The organics were washed with 0.5 M citric acid, then saturated sodium hydrogen carbonate, dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated to dryness. The residue was used without further purification.
