3-Iodo-4-nitro-1H-indazole (0.50 g; 1.73 mmol) was dissolved with stirring in dimethylformamide (15 mL) under an atmosphere of nitrogen. Potassium carbonate (0.478 g; 3.46 mmol) was added followed by benzyl bromide (0.325 g; 1.90 mmol). The mixture was stirred for 16 hours at 25° C. The mixture was added to water (50 mL) and ethyl acetate (50 mL) with stirring. The mixture was transferred to a reparatory funnel and the phases were separated. The ethyl acetate phase was dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under vacuum. The crude product was purified by silica gel chromatography, eluting with hexane/ethyl acetate (5:1). The fractions containing product were concentrated under vacuum to give the 1-benzyl-3-iodo-4-nitro-1H-indazole as a yellow oil (456 mg).
