Procedure
To a cooled (0° C.) suspension of sodium hydride (840 mg, 60% dispersion in mineral oil, 21 mmol) in THF (20 mL) is added a solution comprising 3-hydroxy-benzonitrile (2.4 g, 20 mmol), MEM Chloride (2.25 mL, 20 mmol) and DMPU (2 mL) in THF (20 mL). On complete addition, the cold bath is removed and stirring continued for 3 h. The reaction mixture is then diluted with ether, washed with water and brine, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated. The residue is purified by flash chromatography (silica, 30% ethyl acetate 10% dichloromethane in hexane) to give the title compound as an oil. MS (ESI) 207 (M+H)+.
