A mixture of intermediate (6) (0.098 mol) in HCl (3 N, 300 ml) and THF (300 ml) was stirred at 60° C. for 1 hour. The mixture was basified with solid K2CO3 and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was separated, dried, filtered and the solvent was evaporated, yielding 22.6 g of hexahydro-1-[2-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethyl]-4H-azepin-4-one (intermediate 7).
