Procedure
A mixture of N-(4-bromobutyl)phthalimide (14.1 g, 50 mmol), 4-phenylphenol (8.5 g, 50 mmol), and potassium carbonate (15.0 g, 108 mmol) in DMF (75 ml) was stirred under nitrogen for 16 hours at 85° C., then water (200 ml) was added dropwise to the cooled solution. The precipitate was collected by filtration, and recrystallized from methanol-water to provide N-[4-(1,1'-bi-phenyl]-4-yloxy)butyl]phthalimide as an off-white solid (11.94 g, 64% yield), mp 114°-115° C.
