The symmetrical anhydride of 6-Maleimidocaproic acid (Compound 24, FIG. 5) was prepared by the reaction of maleic anhydride and ε-Amino-n-caproic acid in the presence of acetic acid to give 6-Maleimidocaproic acid (Compound 23) which was then converted to Compound 24 using dicyclohexyl carbodiimide (DCCI).
