Procedure

A mixture of 4-(5-chloroindol-3-yl)butyric acid (1.50 g), benzyl bromide (1.10 g) and potassium carbonate (0.987 in N,N-dimethylformamide (12 ml) was stirred at 25° C. for 4.5 hours. The mixture was poured into a mixture of ethyl acetate and 1N hydrochloric acid. The organic layer was separated, washed with water and brine, and dried over magnesium sulfate. After evaporation of solvent, the residue was chromatographed on silica gel (40 g) eluting with a mixture of hexane and ethyl acetate (10:1) to give benzyl 4-(5-chloroindol-3-yl)butyrate (1.40 g) as pale yellow crystals.
