Procedure
N-Chlorosuccinimide (400 mg) was added to a stirred solution of 5-butyl-1-[[2'-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)biphenyl-4-yl]methyl]pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid (682 mg), triethylamine (1.2 g), 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (248 mg) and triphenylphosphine (891 mg) in dichloromethane (30 ml) by cooling with an ice-bath. After stirring for 15 minutes, triphenylphosphine (262 mg) and N-chlorosuccinimide (133 mg) were added and the mixture was stirred for 30 minutes. After addition of 2N-hydrochloric acid (15 ml) and stirring at room temperature for 30 minutes, the mixture was allowed to separate into layers. The organic layer was washed with water, dried, and concentrated to dryness to give a syrup, which was then purified by column chromatography on silica gel, to give a yellow syrup (460 mg, 58%).
