0.371 ml of N,N-diisopropyl-N-ethylamine and then 0.371 g of methanesulfonic anhydride were added, under a nitrogen atmosphere, to a solution of 500 mg of ethyl, 2-hydroxymethyl-4-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)-1-{4-[2-(trityltetrazol-5-yl)phenyl]phenyl}methylimidazole-5-carboxylate [prepared as described in step (b) above] in 10 ml of tetrahydrofuran. The mixture was then stirred at room temperature for 1.5 hours, after which it was mixed with ethyl acetate and an aqueous solution of sodium hydrogencarbonate. The ethyl acetate layer was separated, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure, to give 610 mg of the title compound as an amorphous powder. The compound was employed in the subsequent reactions without any further purification.
