A solution of 3-cyclopentyl-2-(4-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-propionic acid (185 mg, 0.64 mmol) in methylene chloride (6.5 mL) was cooled to 0° C. and was treated with a 2.0M solution of oxalyl chloride in methylene chloride (0.35 mL, 0.71 mmol) and a few drops of N,N-dimethylformamide. The reaction mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 10 min and at 25° C. for 30 min. The reaction mixture was then treated with a solution of 2-aminothiazole (142 mg, 1.42 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (3.23 mL) and N,N-diisopropylethylamine (0.27 mL, 1.55 mmol). The solution was stirred at 25° C. for 5 h. At this time, the reaction was concentrated in vacuo. Flash chromatography (Merck Silica gel 60, 230-400 mesh, 80/20 hexanes/ethyl acetate) afforded 3-cyclopentyl-N-thiazol-2-yl-2-(4-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-propionamide (127 mg, 53.3%) as a white solid: mp 210-212° C.; EI-HRMS m/e calcd for C18H19F3N2OS (M+) 368.1175, found 368.1170.
