Procedure
A solution of the product from step 3 (0.7 g, 1.6 mmol) in 15 mL of THF and 5 mL of water was cooled to 0° C. in an ice-water bath. To the stirred solution was added hydrogen peroxide (0.7 mL of a 30% solution in water, 7 mmol) and LiOH (75 mg, 3.1 mmol), and the mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 45 min. The reaction was quenched by the addition of a solution of sodium sulfite (0.8 g, 7 mmol) in 5 mL of water, followed by a 0.5 M solution of aqueous NaHCO3 (16 mL, 8 mmol). The stirred mixture was warmed to ambient temperature and most of the THF was removed in vacuo. The aqueous mixture was extracted with two portions of dichloromethane to remove the chiral auxiliary. The aqueous phase was acidified to pH 1 with the addition of 6 N HCl and extracted with two portions of EtOAc. The combined EtOAc layers were dried (MgSO4), filtered, and the solvent was removed in vacuo to give the title compound as a gum.
