To a solution of (1R,3S)-3-[(tert-butoxycarbonyl)amino]cyclopentanecarboxylic acid (from Acros, 0.46 g, 2.0 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (4.6 mL) was added sodium bicarbonate (0.34 g, 4.0 mmol) and iodoethane (0.64 mL, 8.0 mmol). The resulting mixture was stirred overnight at room temperature. The mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate then washed with sat. sodium bicarbonate, water (2×) and brine. The organic was dried (Na2SO4), filtered, and concentrated to give the crude ester. To the crude ester was added methylene chloride (3.0 mL) and trifluoroacetic acid (1.0 mL, 13 mmol). The resulting solution was stirred for 1 h, then concentrated and dried in vacuo to give 0.25 g (46%) of the title compound. LCMS calculated for C8H16NO2 (M+H)+: m/z=158.1. Found: 158.1.
